Memory Mnemory! Using personalised memory tools

Mnemonics are specific letter and word combinations named after the Greek goddess of memory, Mnemosyne. There are no rules to follow when devising your own mnemonics; the more personal they are, the better.

  • Try this mnemonic for remembering the order of the planets based on their distances from the sun:

My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas

(Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)

  • Or, how about this mnemonic for remembering the order of the colours of the rainbow:

Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain

(Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet)

  • If you really want to impress your family with your outstanding knowledge of English history, try this last one for remembering the families of kings in chronological order:

No Plan Like Yours To Study History Well

(Norman, Plantagenet, Lancastrian, York, Tudor, Stuart, Hanoverian, Windsor)

Let's take this further.
